Who Gets to be White?

This is a photo of my great-aunt who lives in Metairie:

She's white.

Now, I posted this photo on Facebook a few months ago that she was an Anita D. Swing who was the first African-American majorette in Jefferson Parish.

I wanted to see who I could fool.

My Facebook friends- both white and black- liked it, commented, shared it.

There's a anecdote about my great-grandfather once getting lost in New Orleans during Mardi Gras and the people around him thought he was Fred Sanford from Sanford and Son.

So, just a thought for the next time you feel uncomfortable around a brown guy with a thick beard or a woman with a dot on her forehead. Know that your children or great-grandchildren might think of them as being just as white as my aunt.
